Discovering Vet-Approved Homemade Dog Food Recipes
In my delightful quest for vet-approved homemade dog food recipes, I’ve stumbled upon a treasure trove of valuable information. Let’s face it; not all search results are created equal. To ensure your canine companion enjoys the healthiest homemade meals, it’s crucial to rely on credible sources. Here are some of the go-to places I’ve discovered:
World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA)
The WSAVA provides “Guidelines on Selecting Pet Food” to help pet owners navigate the often confusing world of pet nutrition. These guidelines offer insights that go beyond the marketing hype on pet food packaging. For instance, have you ever wondered how our delicious Chicken and Veggie Stew measures up to these guidelines? It’s worth checking out!
But here’s the catch: Some of the answers to WSAVA’s questions may not be found on the label. To get the full scoop, you might need to reach out to the manufacturer. And let’s be honest, how many pet owners have the time or inclination to do that? Probably not many.
Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA)
In 2019, the Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA) initiated a groundbreaking resource called “Dare To Ask.” PNA is a global collaboration of nine veterinary organizations, committed to enhancing pet nutrition and education. They’ve crafted a wealth of resources for the veterinary healthcare community.
PNA took the initiative to contact 211 pet food manufacturers in the US and Canada, asking them some vital questions:
- Do you employ or utilize a nutrition expert to formulate your diets?
- Which of the following is true regarding the manufacturing plant(s) where your pet food is made?
The results of this comprehensive survey can be found in the Manufacturer Report, a user-friendly tool with excellent sorting options. If you’re among those who use kibble as part of your dog’s diet, I strongly encourage you to take a peek.
My Choice: Natural Balance
As for me, I’ve had my eyes on Natural Balance when I opt for kibble. Through PNA’s resource, I discovered that Natural Balance falls under the JM Smucker umbrella and uses a contract manufacturer. They also met the nutritional standards for the randomly selected nutrient. Plus, they employ full-time nutritionists with top-notch credentials.

So, there you have it—a glimpse into my quest for the finest in homemade dog food recipes and trusted nutritional information. Before I sign off, here’s a friendly reminder: Give your furry friend a warm hug today!
