Chicken & Veggie Stew – Time, Money, Science
We worked hard here at Broken Leash to create our first homemade dog food recipe. I wanted to create something nutritious, easy to make, and tasty that I would feed my dog Seeley. I’ve been asking peeps why they haven’t started cooking for their dog and I’ve heard time, money, and science as the top things holding them back. I’m going to tell you how Broken Leash addressed all of those issues.
Time & Money
I know that time and money are a large concern for most consumers. To help reduce costs, this recipe is engineered to have as many whole foods as possible to limit the amount of nutritional supplement needed. It also doesn’t force protein, the most expensive ingredient, to be in the first position of the ingredients. I know media has us believing that protein needs to be first. I assure you I asked my consultant on more than one occasion if she was sure. I’m sure she was annoyed with me on some days but it’s important that dogs get the opportunity to be their best selves and I know that starts with their health. Diet plays a key role in that!
Also, since you are buying the food and cooking it, YOU control the quality and cost of the ingredients. Did you just get chills???? That’s right, if you want to buy all organic, go for it. If you want to cut costs a little more and buy store brand rice or chicken, do it! It’s all up to you. Just make sure you get the correct weight of each ingredient in that batch of fresh homemade dog food.
To reduce time, I’ve perfected the system I use to make fresh dog food. The last 10+ years of my career, I’ve been a Project Manager. Efficiency makes me very happy. I hate to waste time. Over the years I’ve learned a lot of lessons that help me cook ONE batch a month to feed my 60 pound dog. Trust me, it took some time to get to this point and I don’t expect you to master it the first time you attempt it. I do expect that you will start at a point light years ahead of where I was when I started. If you have an Instant Pot and 1/2 a day a month to stay home and cook, that’s all it takes! That half day isn’t even all hands on, you get to drink cocktails, bing Netflix, or pull weeds. Your choice. I’d go for the cocktail. You just need to be there to change out the food when it’s ready.
Science. The cool shit.
In addition to time and money, I hear that some consumers are concerned with the science behind the recipe. I was too, plus I’m a degreed chemist so I just find it interesting. To make sure the recipe I created was balanced and complete, I hired a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and together we came up with a recipe that meets AAFCO and WSAVA guidelines (folks, they are the same guidelines, that’s for another day). It is tasty and has all the nutrients your pet needs in one dish. I spent months cooking and testing batches and consulting with my nutritionist to come up with a great product for dogs. All my samples were tested at Clemson University’s Agricultural lab. Being from NC State – Go Wolf Pack! – I’ll just leave it there.
Now for the finale, the science. Below you will see the results of all our work. Out in the universe for all to see. Proof that this recipe meets AAFCO and WSAVA guidelines. Thank you for stopping by and checking us out!!! Don’t forget to stop by the Offers page and buy your first balanced recipe!
